Desmodium adscendens is a creeping or climbing herbaceous plant on tree trunks. It is mainly used by traditional healers to treat liver disease and asthma attacks. Some studies have confirmed its interest after it was introduced in France by doctors who worked in Africa. The tribes of the Amazon rainforest today use Desmodium, which they call "amor seco", as they have always done for hundreds of years.

A tea made from its leaves is given in case of nervousness, a bath treats vaginal infections. In a study in which more than 8,000 natives from different parts of Brazil were interviewed, it was shown that a decoction of the dried roots of the plant is a popular remedy in the tribes to cure malaria. The natives of the Garifuna tribe, in Nicaragua, use decoctions of its leaves to treat diarrhea and venereal diseases, as well as to aid digestion.

In Africa, Desmodium is traditionally used to protect the liver. Traditional healers use it in the treatment of various liver diseases including viral hepatitis and to control asthma attacks.

Desmodium has been studied in France, England, Canada and Ghana. In the latter, the Center for Medical Research in Medical Plants uses it in patients with asthma while in Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Senegal it is used to treat stomach ulcers and constipation. .
